Finding the right soil mix
Getting the right soil for your plants is one way you can prevent overwatering. I like using the Cactus and succulent soil mix from Miracle Grow. You can aerate the soil even more by adding orchid bark and perlite.
If you’re repotting a plant you bought from a big box store like Lowes or Home Depot, be sure to dry out the soil before repotting. This will help with killing pests like fungus gnats who thrive in wet soil. By allowing time to dry out your soil, you also give your new plant time to acclimate to its new environment – an important step that most people forget.
Tools to easily mix and repot plants
Once you’ve got your soil down, you’ll want to store the remaining soil somewhere dry. I like using buckets from Home Depot. The air-tight lid ensures the soil inside remains dry and away from potential pests. It’s also great to use when mixing additional aeration material like perlite and orchid bark. Simply shake the bucket and you’re done!
