How to Make a Custom Wedding Band

While I was planning my wedding, I thought about what I wanted to remember from the big day. Here were my non-negotiables:
- I wanted to be surrounded by our closest friends and family.
- I wanted the pictures and videos to look professional. These were our memories we were talking about and I wanted the memories to look nice.
- I wanted a nice dress but not spend a whole lot of money on it. At the end of the day, the wedding dress was only going to be used for a few hours. Then what? I’d have to find a way to sell it or toss it.
- I wanted my ring to be one that I wanted to wear. After all, I would be wearing it every day for the rest of my life so this thing would have to look and feel special.
Of all the things on my wedding to-do list, I decided to go with a custom wedding band that would complement my engagement ring.
I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I didn’t know what I wanted my ring to look like. Or someone who could design a wedding band for me. So down the research rabbit hole I went. If you’re thinking about making a custom wedding band here are a few tips.
Find some inspiration
I turned to Etsy to get my inspiration. I used terms like wedding band, unique wedding bands, and engagement rings to get an idea of what I like and didn’t like.
I ended up liking a wrap ring or enhancer ring style. My engagement ring was already gorgeous, so I thought it was so fitting that I went with the enhancer ring style. The engagement ring would be placed in the middle and the wedding band would be wrapped around it.

Find a custom jeweler
Now this part, was tough. A quick Google search proved that all the custom jewelers were way out of my budget. I was slowly starting to think that a custom wedding band just wasn’t in the cards for me.
Until I went to a farmers market with a friend and stumbled upon Human Design‘s booth. The owner, Gabriella was at the booth selling her one-of-a-kind pieces. I liked her style and asked if she did custom designs. Thankfully, she said yes.
I sent her a quick email and attached a screenshot of the design I was envisioning. She patiently navigated me through so many wedding band designs and made me think about details that I didn’t even think about.
Find the why and purpose
When creating a custom wedding band, I thought to myself, “if I’m going to invest all this money and time into creating this. I better love the end product.” Here’s a few things that helped me and hopefully can help you too:
The purpose behind the custom band. I wanted to honor the women who raised me while also honoring the woman that I am today. I did that using my mom, grandma and my birthstones.
Gems and overall color palette. Using three different birthstones was no easy feat. My mom’s birthstone, blue topaz, my grandma’s birthstone, pearl, and my birthstone, emerald just didn’t sit well with me. I’m thankful Gabriel helped me look for alternative stones, helped me with the overall color choice of the gems and placement.
Diamond clarity and price. Because my engagement ring already had a lab diamond, I decided to stay with complimenting lab diamonds and lab gems. This was a great way to keep the price down, keep the shine, and to be quite honest I couldn’t even tell the difference between the lab grown and natural diamond.
